Co-inventing tomorrow's medical devices.
JeffSolves, an initiative led by Thomas Jefferson University, aims to bring faculty members and medical students from across the Jefferson community together to generate innovative solutions for urgent healthcare problems. To further the initiative, Thomas Jefferson University partnered with 10XBeta to provide students access to an innovation-driven product management company guidance through the co-invention process, and assistance with the development of novel medical devices.
Thomas Jefferson University and 10XBeta worked closely to design a fully-customized immersion program on medical technology and product development to take students through the full development cycle—from conceptualization, to validation, through prototyping, and onto seeking capital investment.
Launching in 2015, 10XBeta team hosted a series of workshops at the newly opened multidisciplinary innovation center, New Lab, in the revitalized Brooklyn Navy Yard. Select medical students work collaboratively during sessions, introducing the group to a series of design thinking, design research, prototyping, and storytelling techniques—teaching them how to generate innovative solutions and how to effectively present those solutions to collaborators.
These innovation sessions were facilitated by 10XBeta team members and leading expert contributors with backgrounds, ranging from graphic design to electrical engineering, and focused primarily on skills development.
The ultimate goal for the students remained: turn project concepts into functional prototypes that could be tested and validated within the Jefferson medical ecosystem.
As we move into the 4th year of the JeffSolves MedTech Immersion Program, it is clear that doctors are innate inventors—they simply need access to the tools to define problems and explore opportunities.
After a successful pilot program in 2015, New Lab, 10XBeta, and Thomas Jefferson University look forward to the future of the JeffSolves MedTECH program. Together, we were able to leverage access to engineering and manufacturing devices, design thinking, rapid prototyping processes, and medical expertise to create innovative solutions, making anything possible.
